Purpose of education is to produce good citizens: Guv

GUWAHATI, April 10 - The main purpose of education is to produce good, productive and conscientious citizens, Governor Jagdish Mukhi said today at the closing ceremony of the silver jubilee celebrations of Maharishi Vidya Mandir (MVM) Senior Secondary School, Silpukhuri.

During the event held at the GMCH auditorium, Mukhi congratulated the school on completing 25 years, and said it has provided its students opportunities that have enabled them to inculcate values and commitments for manifesting a knowledge-driven society, a press release said.

Mukhi hailed Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of the MVM schools and a pioneer of transcendental meditation, saying such meditation was a scientifically proven technique which helps a person attain his/her full potential. He hailed the contributions of the faculty members in shaping the young minds, saying, �I feel the main purpose of education is to produce good, productive and conscientious citizens�. Referring to Aristotle who said a civilised society was one where good people became good citizens, Mukhi urged the teachers to use their noble vocation to bring out good and conscientious citizens.

Dr Amarjyoti Choudhury, Vice Chancellor of Assam Down Town University; Dr RK Sharma, VC, USTM, East Guwahati MLA Siddhartha Bhattacharya; TP Bhattacharjee, Consultant Director of MVM Schools; singer Samar Hazarika; Dr Prakash Ch Joshi, vice president of Maharishi Siksha Sansthan, and MVM Silpukhuri Principal Manika Goswami were present on the occasion.
