SHILLONG, June 20 - Women residents of Punjabi Lane today held a protest demonstration before officials of the Land Record and Survey conducting a survey of the area here.
The officials have been tasked to survey the entire Punjabi Lane area by the High Level Committee (HLC) constituted by the State Government to relocate the residents.
Despite the protest, the officials went ahead with the survey work, which is expected to provide important data relating to the area. The total area being surveyed is estimated to be around 9,800 square metres.
The officials involved in the survey work said that the entire process would be completed within the next three days. We intend to complete the entire survey of the area in the earliest possible time, said a surveyor.
Meanwhile, the women protesters said that they are opposed to any attempt to relocate them from their present homes. Some of them said that they were born there and still others have seen their grandchildren growing up in that residential area.
The women protesters held placards opposing the Governments move to relocate them from their present homes, while others raised slogans against the survey of the area.
Most of the residents of Punjabi Lane are State Government employees engaged as cleaners in different departments. A large chunk of them constitute the work force of the Shillong Municipal Board.
On the other hand, several NGOs have sought the relocation of these residents from the area, insisting that decongestion is necessary.
