Pune Assamese community stages protest against CAA

By The Assam Tribune

GUWAHATI, Dec 18 - The Assamese community living in Pune staged a strong protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Hundreds of Assamese people in association with Luit-The Assamese Society gathered at the Chhatrapati Sambhajiraje Garden, JM Road, Pune, today to register their protest by holding placards. They also appealed to the Centre not to introduce the Act in Assam.

This is a draconian Act and it endangers the culture of Assam as the inclusion of the immigrants, irrespective of their religion, under the Citizenship Amendment Act will lead to erosion of ethnic, cultural, linguistic identity of indigenous Assamese people, a press release stated.

The CAA also nullifies the Assam Agitation in which 855 people sacrificed their lives in the hope of an infiltration-free Assam, they said in the release.

They said, We have joined hands to stage a protest to show our solidarity with our brothers, sisters and families back in Assam, who are suffering under indefinite curfew, internet ban, police and security forces brutality and leading a life of fear, uncertainty and trauma.
