BADARPUR, Sept 25 � Preparations are in full swing at this Barak Valley Railway subdivisional headquarters to celebrate Durga Puja from September 30 to October 5 with various programmes. Office-bearers of over 200 puja committees in the town are working round the clock to make the celebrations a grand success.
Erection of pandals, besides decoration works inside and illumination outside, is going on in full swing in various localities. Various dhaki teams have also reached Badarpur as well as other parts of the Barak Valley. The markets here are witnessing hectic business with a rush of customers who, despite the skyrocketing prices, are buying new clothes and other accessories.
This year, more than 200 puja pandals are being set up in the greater Badarpur rail township and the civil town area, as also the adjoining rural areas under the Badarpur Circle. Some puja committees like the Badarpur Railway Ananda Dham Kalibari Puja Committee, Badarpur Jangla Kalibari Puja Committee, Badarpur Railway Traffic Colony Puja Committee, GRP Colony Sarbajanin Puja Committee and Badarpur ST Road Puja Committee have announced special programmes for celebrating the Durga Puja festival.
This year, the Badarpur ST Road Durga Puja Committee is completing 42 years. Maintaining the tradition, the puja committee this year is modelling their pandal on an attractive temple. Its secretary Nipu Das said the Durga idol will be 12 feet in height. He said the puja committee has also taken all steps to maintain peace and discipline on the entire premises during the festival.
It may be mentioned here that among all the pujas here, Badarpur Ghat stands out as it is the only one organised and supervised entirely by women. Held under the auspices of the Dasha-Bhuja Mahila Sangstha, this puja is being celebrated since the last year.
Meanwhile, the Circle Officer of Badarpur, who is also the executive officer of the Badarpur Town Committee, has decided to provide special facilities in the town during the puja days.
