Public participation at Police Day function

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Sept 29 - The 67th Assam Police Day, to be observed on October 1, will witness participation of the general public along with police personnel for the first time.

This has been planned in an attempt to improve police-public relations in the State, Director General of Assam Police Khagen Sharma said.

Addressing a press conference here today, Sharma said the general public would be involved in greater numbers in the Assam Police Day celebration on October 1. He said 35-45 groups of general people from all districts have been invited to showcase their unique culture or tradition during the Assam Police Day central function to be held at Nehru Stadium in the evening.

These groups will take out a cultural procession through the streets of Guwahati starting from the Sports Authority of India complex and finally converge at Nehru Stadium, where 67 lamps will be lit by eminent people from various walks of life in the evening to mark the 67th Assam Police Day.

The DGP has urged the people of Guwahati, especially the student community, to participate in the lamp-lighting programme at Nehru Stadium and a cultural function at the same venue thereafter.

We are trying to bridge that gap and this is an effort towards that end. Both police and public will have to strike a bonding for an overall development of the society Sharma added.
