Public cooperation must for better policing: DGP

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 1 - Director General of Assam Police Khagen Sharma today said that public order can be maintained by the police only with the support of the common public.

When you have a strength of 70,000 policemen against a population of more than three crores, it is not possible to maintain public order without public cooperation. Both police and public have to work in tandem for a crime-free society, Sharma said on the occasion of 67th Assam Police Day celebration organised at the 10 APBn campus.

Sharma, while stating that the Assam Police has successfully fought the insurgent problem over the years, maintained that the law-and-order situation has improved a lot in the State and it is the duty of the police department to ensure safety and security to the common man.

There are still problems and we are committed to tackle them in the greatest interest of the society. An improvement in the police-public relation would certainly help the cause, Sharma pointed out.

Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia, who also attended the function, said that due to the improved law-and-order scenario, economic condition of the State has improved and investors are also coming forward.

The State Government is leaving no stone unturned to improve the policing standard and stress has been laid on improving thana-level pro-activeness, he added.

Later in the day, a cultural procession was taken out in the city starting from the Sports Authority of India complex and culminating at the Nehru Stadium where a function was organised.
