Protesters stage anti-CAA sit-in, demand Akhil�s release

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Dec 26 - A sit-in protest was organised by the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), Lakhimpur district unit, and its student wing CMSS in front of the Deputy Commissioner�s office in North Lakhimpur on Thursday, demanding the release of detained KMSS leader and anti-CAA activist Akhil Gogoi.

The demonstrators demanded the immediate release of Gogoi, Dharjya Konwar and others. Many public figures of North Lakhimpur addressed the gathering.

A protest organised by the Ghilamora regional unit of the AASU was attended by various organisations like Ghilamora Senior Citizens� Association, Ghilamora Sakha Sahitya Sabha and Ghilamora Anchalik Mahila Samiti. Lakhimpur district AASU assistant general secretary Tultul Bharali led the sit-in demonstration against the CAA, and demanded scrapping of the Act.

In the morning, a 48-hour hunger strike launched by the Sadou Asom Moriya Yuva Chatra Santha against the CAA ended with renewed calls for its scrapping.

On Wednesday, Sanghati, an anti-CAA demonstration in the form of cultural expression was held at the playground of Narayanpur Higher Secondary School in Narayanpur. An all-religion cultural programme was organised by the people of greater Narayanpur to celebrate Christmas, in which various artistes performed naam, zikir, dhol badan and Mising Bihu as part of their protest against the CAA.

A massive anti-CAA rally was organised by the AJYCP in Phukanarhat, near Panigaon in Lakhimpur district. The Lakhimpur district unit of the All Assam High School Teachers� Association also declared their support to the anti-CAA movement.

Meanwhile, in Dhakuakhana, police registered cases against 15 persons for allegedly vandalising and burning the offices of the BJP and AGP at various places under Dhakuakhana and Ghilamora Police Stations.
