Protesters prevent Meghalaya CM from taking chopper

By Correspondent

TURA, Dec 12 - The Garo Hills continued to simmer over the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) with angry protesters turning away Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, from taking the chopper to return after a scheduled programme.

As per information received, the Chief Minister was at Williamnagar to inaugurate the Negmandal PHC and take part in the Togan Nengminza memorial service at Chisobibra, about 8 km from the town.

Angry protesters first prevented the Chief Minister from inaugurating the PHC, asking him to go back. While Sangma was able to take part in the memorial service, he was not allowed to return to the town after protesters blocked the road by burning tyres and tree branches. The Chief Minister had to abandon the plan to use the chopper service from the Rongrenggre field. Sources stated that he returned in a road convoy.

Protests erupted at many places on the Garo Hills with NGOs calling a night road blockade starting from 8 pm this evening to 5 am tomorrow.

Meanwhile, residents of Williamnagar today thronged the streets in protest against the CAB while condemning the act of Tura MP Agatha Sangma. The protesters also condemned the BJP-led NDA Government for passing the citizenship Bill, and came down heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The public rally, led by NGOs like the GSU, FKJGP and AHAM, saw attendance of over 1,000 people from all walks of life. Effigies of the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Tura MP Agatha Sangma and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma were burnt by the protesters.
