GUWAHATI, Dec 21 � A host of organizations including the Sadou Asom Progotishil Nari Santha, the Nirjatan Birodhi Aikya Mancha, the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), and India Against Corruption, Assam on Friday voiced their anger against increasing violence and discrimination against women and demanded of the government to take urgent steps to ensure security of women by making the laws more stringent.
Condemning the recent Delhi incident wherein a girl was gang raped and thrown out of a moving bus and all other incidents that brought pain and misery in the lives of women, the organizations took out a protest procession today appealing to all citizens to join hands to stop heinous crimes against women.
The Sadou Asom Progotishil Nari Santha publicity secretary Junu Bora said that unless the government acts tough, the perpetrators of the horrific crimes would not stop. Describing such incidents as a bane of a progressive society, Bora said that the laws have to be reformed to ensure justice for the victims.
Demanding exemplary punishment for these criminals, Bora said that it is the only deterrent for preventing any crime against women.
�It is very unfortunate that women are increasingly subjected to different forms of violence. Even a section of the society is insensitive towards the victims. The time has come for the government to ensure that such incidents are not repeated,� said Bora regretting the laws dealing with such incidents are not at all strong.
A cross section of the citizens including college students joined the protest programme to condemn crime against women. The Asom Mahila Sangha, women organizations of Satgaon, Fatashil, Ambari, Brihattar Guwahati Bhumi Pattan Sangram Samiti and others took part in the programme. Noted faces such as Sumitra Hazarika, Arupa Baruah, Rani Gohain, Maini Mahanta, Savita Lahkar, and Asomi Gogoi were also seen amongst the protesters.
�The public should come forward and put pressure on the government to act immediately,� said Bora.
On the other hand, India Against Corruption, Assam, students of TISS and members of non government organizations observed a candle light vigil at Dighalipukhuri demanding of the government not to take a lax attitude towards prosecuting the accused.
