Protest rally in Nagaon over assault case

By CORRESPONDENT

NAGAON, Aug 25 - A protest rally backed by several organizations today demanded unconditional release of pro-talk ULFA member Moon Bora and others who had been arrested in connection with a brawl involving some local traders here.

On the other hand, trader Abhishek Roy alias Mithu, who was arrested yesterday, was produced in the court which remanded him to police custody. It may be mentioned here that Abhishek, a BJP leader, is close to Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain and all his official works were conducted by Abhishek.

Pro-talk ULFA leaders Arabinda Rajkhowa, Jiten Dutta and others demanded unconditional release of Moon Bora and his associates in the rally even as different organizations expressed concern over what they termed was an uncalled-for act of assault on the Assamese people by outsiders.

Thousands of protesters also marched through main thoroughfares of the town shouting slogans. About 20 organizations, including pro- talk ULFA, AJYCP, AASU, Garia Moria Deshi Jatiyo Parishad, etc., extended their support to the rally.

Later, representatives of different organizations had a discussion with Nagaon deputy commissioner Shamsher Singh and demanded unconditional release of Moon Bora and others, besides action against additional SP Sanjib Saikia.

Meanwhile, the 12-hour Dhing bandh called by the Former ULFA Coordination Committee passed off peacefully today. The AJYCP supported the bandh.

Police arrested pro-talk ULFA man Moon Bora along with Nitu Bora, Ratul Bora, Lalit Chandra Bora and Dandi Deka and a case was registered against them. The persons were arrested following an FIR by Raju Das who alleged that Moon Bora and others came to his business establishment at Panigaon on August 22 demanding hafta (monthly dues).

The pro-talk ULFA group, however, denied the allegation, saying that Moon and others had gone to the business house seeking donation for flood relief.

Binod Bora, brother of Moon Bora, filed another case against Raju Das and others, while on behalf of the pro-talk ULFA group, Pradip Kumar Bordoloi filed another case.

Acting on the two FIRs, police arrested Raju Das, his brother Nidhan Das and his employee Ajit Bhuyan for physically assaulting Moon Bora and others.
