By Staff Correspondent

JORHAT, June 13 - A huge rally was taken out by the students of Majuli College in the island district today to protest against the lynching of two artistes from Guwahati Nilotpal Das and Abhijit Nath - at Panjuri village in Karbi Anglong district last week.

The students took out the rally from Kamalabari and ended at the Majuli Deputy Commissioners office.

The protesters carried posters and banners demanding exemplary punishment to the perpetrators of the incident.

The posters and placards also called for maintaining peace and calm across the state by exercising restraint by all sections of the Assamese society.

Later, the students submitted a memorandum to the government through Majuli Deputy Commissioner Deba Prasad Misra seeking stern punishment to be meted out to those involved in the brutal killing of the youths.

Meanwhile, yesterday evening a protest meeting against the killing of the youths and also the lynching of a Plus II student (originally hailing from Titabar) by a mob in Diphu five years back was held at Millennium Park at Baruah Sari-Ali here.

Jhankar Saikia who was with his father, then working in Diphu, was mercilessly beaten to death by a mob following a altercation they had reportedly over auto-rickshaw fare.

What was shocking was that Jhankar was dragged by the mob from the custody of a police team.

The meeting organised by E- Media Journalists Association of Jorhat, lit up candles in front of photographs of the slain youths to offer homage to the departed souls and carried out a mass signature drive to demand holding of trial in both the cases in fast-track courts.

The protesters later submitted a memorandum in this regard to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal through the Jorhat Deputy Commissioner.
