Protest march against AFSPA

GUWAHATI, Nov 2 � Coinciding with the date of beginning of the historic anti-Armed Forces (Special Power) Act (AFSPA) protest, 14 years back by iron lady of Manipur Iram Sharmila, the All India Shiksha Sangharsh Yatra today marked its beginning all over the country to highlight its demand for an education system that can lead to a democratic, socialist, secular and enlightened India. In the city, the ceremonial beginning of the Yatra from the north-eastern region of the country was initiated through a meeting held on the bank of the Dighalipukhuri tank this morning. The Yatra will formally be flagged off at Imphal by Irom Sharmila tomorrow.

Addressing the Dighalipukhuripar meeting, noted educationist and a leading organiser of the march Prof Anil Sadgopal apprised the gathering that the participants of the NE zonal march will cover Kohima, Dimapur, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dergaon, Bokakhat, Nagaon, Jagiroad, Khetri. On�November 14, they will take part in a big rally proposed to be held in Guwahati.

Many tribal students� organisations of this part of the country are expected to take part in the rally. Then the participants of the Yatra will move to Goalpara and then they will cover Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri on their way to Barabaisa near Alipurduar in West Bengal.

On December 4, 2014, they will reach Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, said Prof Sadgopal. Prof Sadgopal described the AFSPA as unconstitutional arguing that it is an affront to the provision of the country�s Constitution which has granted equal rights and equal status to all citizens of the country. The function, which was presided over by Assam Pradesh Bank Employees� Association general secretary Dilip Sarma, was also addressed by Dr Dinesh Baishya, NE Zonal Convenor of the All India Shiksha Sangharsh Yatra, among others.
