By CORRESPONDENT

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Nov 28: The Tribal Students Scholarship Demand Samiti on Friday protested in North Lakhimpur over the delay in the release of scholarships for ST students by the State Government.

The Samiti members burnt the effigies of Chief Minister Tarunn Gogoi, Education Minister Sarat Borkakoti, Dhemaji MLA Sumitra Pegu, Majuli MLA Rajiv Lochan Pegu, Bharat Narah and Ranee Narah in protest against the governments inaction in releasing the scholarships meant for the ST students since 2011.

Lachit Divas observed: The Lachit Divas was recently celebrated in North Lakhimpur with a call for unity and integrity in the State by imbibing the ideals of Lachit Borphukan.

The Divas was organised by the Purbanchal Tai Sahitya Sabha in Hatiloong with a daylong programme. A meeting was held on the occasion which was chaired by Uma Gogoi. The secretary of Purbanchal Tai Sahitya Sabha, Pushpadhar Gogoi, pressed for remembering the concept of Bor-Asom (greater Assam) espoused by Lachit Borphukan.

Dr Susengpha Gogoi, Assistant Professor of North Lakhimpur College, criticised the latest trend of distorting of Assams history by certain groups by bringing in some leaders from outside the State to colour the stature of Lachit Borphukan on religious lines.

The meeting was also attended by former MLA Ghana Buragohain. Lachit Divas was also observed jointly by Khilanjiya Okya Sanmilan, Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, AJYCP, All Assam Moriya Students Union and Senior Citizens Forum in North Lakhimpur by staging road shows at 10 different places.
