By STAFF Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 8 - Congress members and supporters today staged a demonstration in front of the Rajiv Bhawan here in protest against the detention of AICC vice president Rajiv Gandhi on his way to the site of police firing in Madhya Pradesh, in which five agitating farmers were killed.

The APCC said in a statement here this evening that an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also burnt by the demonstrators. They also demanded resignation of Prime Minister Modi and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, describing them as slayers of the farmers.

Kamakhya image: The APCC has, in a separate statement, demanded immediate removal of the image of the Kamakhya Temple from the dustbins in the city. These images have been painted by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) on the municipal dustbins.

APCC spokesman Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee described this act of painting the image of the famous Shakti shrine on the municipal dustbins as an affront on the Shakti heritage of the people of the State. He said the Congress is not opposed to the idea of projecting the temple globally, but by trying to project it with its image painted on the garbage bins, the GMC has hurt the sentiments of the people.
