Protest against molestation case in Silchar gathers steam

SILCHAR, Dec 31 - People of Babutilla, adjacent to the National Institute of Technology (NIT) here took out a torch rally demanding stringent action against Sanjib Bhattacharjee, who has been accused of molesting a 10-year-old minor of the locality.

Hundreds of people took part in the rally and gheraoed the Ghungoor Police Station and shouted slogans demanding exemplary punitive action against the accused.

Meanwhile, according to police, the accused was arrested after an FIR was lodged regarding the incident which took place on December 20.

�We understand that the accused has been arrested. But the incident needs proper investigation since we have a hunch that the matter is being manipulated outside the ambit of the legal framework only to bail out the accused. We therefore urge the Chief Minister to intervene in the matter. If need be, we shall appeal to the Prime Minister to look into the matter,� the peeved locals maintained.
