Protest against killing of rhinos

JAMUGURIHAT, May 8 - The people of Sootea staged a strong protest and gheraoed the police station on May 2 against the killing of two rhinos in south Sootea area within a span of 20 days and demanded the arrest of the poachers.

The people alleged that the poachers have an unholy nexus with the forest and police staff as they have failed to take prompt action, even though people informed the officials about the roaming of rhinos in the area several times. A full grown rhino was killed on May 1 at Barhola in Chayengia Bakori in the 6th addition of Kaziranga National Park and its horn taken away. At the intervention of Mousumi Kalita, the Additional SP Biswanath the situation was controlled. In the meantime, Sootea Police arrested two poachers Gaji and Peermat Ali from the area.
