Protest against hike in land revenue

HAILAKANDI, Nov 1 � The members of the Hailakandi district unit of the All India Krishak Sabha staged a dharna on Tuesday in front of the Deputy Commissioner�s office here in protest against the increase of land revenue. They also brought out a protest procession on the main streets of Hailakandi town.

A delegation of the Sabha met the Deputy Commissioner and submitted a memorandum, enlisting their demands, which include the cancellation of the increased amount of land revenue, sanction of land pattas to farmers living on government wasteland, daily wages of Rs 300 for 200 days to the people in the rural areas under the MGNREGA, implementation of the Forest Act, 2006, etc. The memorandum also demanded the early fulfilment of their demands.

Later, a meeting of the Sabha was also held under the presidentship of Burhan Uddin. It was addressed by Kumud Das, Ananta Das, Sunirmal Das, Briksha Mohan Tripura and Narayan Debnath among others.

All the speakers condemned the alleged anti-peasant policies of the Government and urged the farmers to unite to fight against these policies. They also highlighted the various problems of the farmers in Hailakandi district.
