Project in Bhupenda�s name in Goalpara dist

GOALPARA, Nov 5 � Bhupen Hazarika Mukali Mancha aru Uddyan, one of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi�s dream projects was ceremonially inaugurated by several cultural personalities from diverse backgrounds today in all the eight development blocks of the district in the presence of large public gatherings which included school students, conscious citizens, several artists and others.

Ceremonially inaugurating the project at Balijana Development Block at Kalyanpur GP office by the district administration and DRDA officials admist a large public presence, the chief guest, theatre and cultural icon Shukra Surjya Rabha while paying glowing tributes to Dr Bhupen Hazarika on his third death anniversary, for his significant contributions in the field of culture, said that time has come to imbibe the values of this great personality and to keep his works alive in our hearts and minds as a mark of respect. He added that his music not only captivated the hearts of millions of his ardent fans, but also represented the plural Assamese identity at several national as well as international platforms. He also appealed for adherence to strict quality control as a mark of respect to the great soul on the civil construction works to be carried out under the scheme and also thanked the government for these novel initiatives.

While Deputy Commissioner, Preetom Saikia in his brief speech said that the Government has taken up the onus of recognising the contributions of the great maestro in a befitting manner by constructing an open air theatre and a park in each of the eight development blocks of Goalpara district at an estimated cost of Rs 25 lakh each under the MNREGA scheme. Recollecting the immense contributions and laurels brought to the State as well as to the Assamese society and some of his lifetime achievements as a singer, poet, film maker, social activist and a composer, he added that he was truly a great man and his ideals should be espoused by everyone.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman, Assam Minorities Development Board, Alhaj Abdur Rashid Mondal traced the life of the great soul and spoke on his immense and outstanding contributions, especially in the cultural field and also as a man way ahead of his times for his untiring efforts to promote cultural pluralism in the Assamese society. He also added that the present Government under the able leadership of Tarun Gogoi has taken the initiative to construct an open theatre and a park in each block across the State to immortalise the works of the cultural icon.

While the chairperson of the Zilla Parishad Council, Indira Medhi spoke on keeping Dr Bhupen Hazarika�s legacy alive in days to come, even though the great cultural icon did receive his due accolades and recognition very late in life and posthumously, but she exhorted that we have to work and follow the footsteps of this great son of soil who tried to weave and integrate various communities into one Assamese pluralistic identity. Among those who spoke on the occasion were the PD, DRDA, Khanindra Choudhury, BDO Abdul Majid and others.
