Prof Jyotish Baruah Memorial Lecture

GUWAHATI, April 15 - The first Professor Jyotish Baruah Memorial Lecture- cum-award presentation ceremony was organised recently by the Department of Statistics, Cotton University here in honour of the former Head of the Department, a year after his demise, a press release stated.

Professor Baruah served Cotton College for 33 years from 1958 till his retirement in 1991. The event started with paying of floral tributes to the great teacher, a bhajan rendered by his niece Mrinalini Borthakur and reminiscences of his life and works by the chief guest Professor Tarakeswar Chou-dhury, former Head of the Department of Mathematics, Cotton College, the present Head of the Department of Statistics, Dr Kamal Barman, retired Professor of Statistics Biswajit Chakraborty and by Dr Hiranmoyee Baruah, retired Principal of KRB Girls� College, Guwahati. A book of tributes to Professor Baruah by his former students and relatives was released on the occasion by the chief guest.

The memorial lecture was delivered by eminent journalist and writer Samudra Gupta Kashyap on the �Act East: Act North East�. While explaining the Act East policy of the Government of India, he highlighted the essential features of North East India and also enlightened the audience about several lesser known facts related to the North East in the areas of education, sports, culture, ethnicity, traditions, significant contributions etc.

The recipient of the first Professor Jyotish Baruah Memorial Award was Ms Kasturi Kashyap, the topper in Statistics (Core) of UG Final Examination, 2017 of Cotton University. The award, sponsored by the family of Professor Baruah comprises a cash prize of Rs 10,000/- and a certificate. The award was received by Kasturi's mother.

The programme was attended by distinguished academicians from various institutions of Guwahati, present and retired faculty members and students of various departments of Cotton University and family members of Professor Baruah. The event was moderated by Dr Sangeeta Barthakur, Associate Professor, Department of Statistics, Cotton University.
