Probe ordered into Ukhrul incident

IMPHAL, Oct 25 - The Manipur government has ordered an inquiry into the Ukhrul incident wherein unidentified gunmen fired towards a helipad in the hill town minutes after a chopper with a Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh-led ministerial team took off.

Additional DGP (Intelligence) P Doungel has been entrusted with the probe to inquire into the circumstances leading to the incident that occurred during the visit of Chief Minister, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister and other ministers to Ukhrul on Monday, said DGP Manipur, LM Khoute in an order on Tuesday.

Doungel will also look into the lapses in security arrangements, if any, fix responsibility and submit his report with recommendations to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future, within seven days.

Five police men are likely to be suspended in connection with the Ukhrul incident, according to a reliable source.

On Monday, Chief Minister Ibobi and seven ministers of the State were forced to fly back to Imphal from Ukhrul, 84 km east of here, following protest by Tangkhul Naga Long, apex body of Tangkhul tribe and subsequent firing by unidentified gunmen. A Manipur Rifles jawan sustained injury in the incident.

Ibobi was scheduled to inaugurate a 100-bed district hospital, two upgraded power sub-stations, bank and a block development officer�s building in hill district.
