MANGALDAI, Aug 20 - At a time when the process of claims and objections related to the final draft NRC is about to start, an uneasy calm has been prevailing in the Ondolajhar Gaon Panchayat area under Dalgaon Revenue Circle in Darrang district following recovery of a bunch of NRC verification documents today morning by local people from a ditch behind No. 27 NRC Seva Kendra (NSK) attached to the Ondolajhar GP office.

Local people here alleged that some important documents related to the verification of legacy data, including report of the District Magistrate Investigating Team (DMIT) with seal and signature of the authorised officer of District Registrar of Citizen Registration (DRCR) were recovered inside a plastic carry bag from the ditch outside the NSK.

The locals alleged sheer negligence on the part of the section of officials and staff of the concerned NSK . A section of local people have obviously demanded legal action against the erring NRC officials.

On the other hand, while talking to this Correspondent over phone, Jagat Jibon Dutta, the Local Registrar of Citizen Registration (LRCR) of the concerned NSK and the District Labour Officer ruled out any negligence on their part. He claimed that the bundle of paper were nothing but waste documents kept in the dustbin of the NSK for disposal.

However, he failed to clarify how these documents lying in a dustbin within the NSK were later found in an abandoned state behind the NSK.

These were not official documents but some waste paper thrown into the dustbin for disposal. We did not place it outside the NSK. But due to heavy work load, we could not ascertain how the bunch was disposed off and subsequently recovered from outside the NSK, LRCR Dutta clarified.

Meanwhile, Darrang district Deputy Commissioner and DRCR Ashok Kumar Barman has directed the NRCs District Nodal Officer and Additional Deputy Commissioner Bidyut Bikash Bhagawati to conduct an inquiry into the incident and submit his findings at the earliest.
