Probe ordered into Rajiv Bhawan incident

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 29: The State Government today ordered an inquiry into the Rajiv Bhawan clash that broke out between the supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress on Monday even as police arrested senior BJP leaders, including Vijay Gupta, for their alleged involvement in the incident.

The arrested include Rupam Goswami, Pranabjyoti Lahkar and Diganta Kalita, who according to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, is the right-hand of BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma.

While Gupta was arrested from the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, the other arrests were made from different locations in Guwahati. Earlier, a team of Guwahati police also visited the BJP party office in search of the accused.

Condemning the Monday incident, Gogoi today said that the attack on the Congress party headquarters by the BJP supporters was unprecedented and highly condemnable.

What Nilamoni Sen Deka said was also not right, and we condemn it. But at the same time, what the BJP did has no justification, Gogoi stated.

It was a planned attack and an attempt to murder. Even the ULFA had not attacked the Congress party office. The hooliganism displayed by the BJP is highly condemnable. The BJP party has turned into a group of murderers, the Chief Minister said while talking to mediapersons today.

The inquiry will be headed by Additional Chief Secretary VB Pyarelal, who will also ascertain lapses on the part of the police, if any, Gogoi said.

The Chief Minister today said that there are reports indicating that some of the top leaders of the party had instigated the violence, which is unfortunate.

Criminal records of the BJP leaders are already known and one wonders what they would resort to if they by any chance come to power, he said.

Meanwhile, later in the day, the arrested accused were produced in the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro) that remanded them to judicial custody.
