Probe on into NE ultras investments in city

By R Dutta Choudhury

GUWAHATI, Jan 5 The security agencies are probing into the possible investments by members of militant outfits of the North Eastern region in Guwahati after receiving some vital inputs in this regard.

Highly placed security sources told The Assam Tribune that they have got some leads into the possible investments of the militants in Guwahati and we have taken serious note of it to probe into the leads. However, sources admitted that it is too early to make an assumption into the volume of the investments by the militants.

Sources pointed out that senior members of militant outfits of North East frequently visit Guwahati for treatment and to use the city as safe hideouts and there have been reports of investments by the militants. The militants normally invest their money with the persons whom they can trust and under normal circumstances, they would not like to invest in a far away place.

However, there have been instances of militants making investments in Nepal and Bangladesh. Sources pointed out that huge investments of DHD(J) commander-in-chief Niranjan Hojai in Nepal has already come to light and there are some inputs available with the security agencies which indicate that other leaders of militant outfits also invested substantial amounts in Nepal. Sources also said that the militants also invested huge amounts in Bangladesh.

Security sources revealed that at least 30 members of Manipur based militant outfits, mostly those belonging to the PLA were arrested in Guwahati in the year 2011 and the militants visit the city to take shelter and for treatment as the medical facilities in the city are the best among all the NE states. The PLA also reportedly made some investments in Guwahati city and the leads available with the security forces in this regard are now being probed into.

Sources said that the militants also visit North Bengal, Kolkata, Delhi and Bangalore for treatment frequently and the possibility of them investing money in those places cannot be ruled out.
