Probe on into jailbreak case

By Correspondent

BARPETA, May 5 The Barpeta Police has launched a manhunt to nab the two accused who fled from the District Jail here. It has started investigations into the incident to find out if there was any loophole. This was stated by Siladitya Chetia, Superintendent of Police, Barpeta.

Talking to this correspondent, Chetia said that all possible steps have been taken to arrest the culprits. At the same time, the police is probing the incident to find out any flaws in security or dereliction of duty on the part of any official.

It may be mentioned here that two undertrials fled from the jail on Saturday by climbing the high wall, breaching the entire security system of the high-profile district jail. The accused Manoj Das and Manirul Hussain are reportedly involved in car lifting and ATM burglaries and are suspected to be accomplices of Anil Chouhan, the kingpin of the car-lifting racket.

The incident came to light on Sunday during the head count of the inmates at the jail.

Manoj Das, who hails from Katanipara under the Changsari Police Station in Kamrup district, is accused of ATM burglary and a case (46/15) under Section 427/380 of the IPC was registered at the Barpeta Road Police Station in this regard. He was arrested in connection with the case and sent to the Barpeta Jail on February 23 this year. On the other hand, Manirul Hussain hails from Surjyakata under the Bolasipara Police Station in Dhubri district and is reportedly involved in ATM burglary and car lifting. Two cases (55/15 U/S 224 and 7/15 U/S 457/380/511) are registered against him at the Barpeta Police Station and one case (46/15 US 457/427/380/511) is registered at the Barpeta Road Police Station. He was sent to the jail on March 15 this year.

Significantly, Manirul had escaped from police custody twice, once in Dhubri and once earlier in Barpeta, at the time of medical examination just after his arrest. The police, however, managed to arrest him from Guwahati and he was subsequently sent to judicial custody.
