Probe into Rumi Nath attack ordered

BADARPUR, July 2 � A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the assault on Congress MLA Rumi Nath and her second husband, at a Karimganj hotel which sparked off violent protests and bandh in Barak Valley.

Karimganj Deputy Commissioner Debeswar Malakar today ordered the inquiry into the incident. Santi Kumar Singh, civil SDO of Karimganj has been entrusted to inquiry the incident. The report of the inquiry has to be submitted within 15 days, the DC said.

Nath who represent Borkhola Constituency in Cachar along with her second husband Jacky Zakir were beaten up and injured on Friday night in a hotel by a group of people. Five persons were arrested in this connection.

HAILAKANDI, Correspondent adds: Normal life in Hailakandi district was completely paralysed today due to the bandh called by the different organisations in protest against the assault on Borkhola MLA Rumi Nath and subsequently harassment on innocent people by the police.

Tension mounted yesterday evening when a trader Sunil Chandra Deb was attacked by some miscreants in Hailakandi Hertbertganj bazaar with sharp weapons. Police later arrested two people from the bazaar area and in protest against their arrest, large number of people including women gheroed Hailakandi police station and registered their protest. Police had to lathicharge to disperse the mob.

The traders of Hailakandi bazaar today observed total Hailakandi bandh protesting the last night incident.

Reports of violence were also received from different parts of the district during the bandh hours. In Algapur circle, atleast eight persons including an woman were injured when protesters damaged a Guwahati bound super deluxe bus of ASTC.
