Probe into collapse of railway boundary wall

HAILAKANDI, April 26 - The police here today started an investigation into collapse of a newly-constructed 300-metre boundary wall of NF Railways in Lala railway station area in Hailakandi district.

It may be mentioned here that the 11 families living near the boundary wall of Lala railway station had filed an FIR in Lala police station against the assistant executive engineer KC Roy alleging the gross anomalies in the construction works of the wall. Lala police also filed a case (No.199/2016) under Section 409, 427 and 283 of the Indian Penal Code.

The Officer-in-Charge of Lala police station M Islam informed that they have asked the Deputy Chief Engineer of NF Railways Pushkar Srivastava to produce before the investigating team Assistant Executive Engineer KC Roy, who is in charge of the construction in Lala.

He also informed that they have already collected samples of the materials used for the construction of the wall. The samples would also be sent to the forensic laboratory in Guwahati to ascertain the quality of the product used for construction. He said that they have sought the help of Public Works Department to identify whether any discrepancies or compromise on quality had been made during the construction of the wall.

Altogether 11 families have been affected due to this. Five houses have been badly damaged, police said. A high level team of Railways has also inspected the area located in Ward no. 4 of Lala town, 17 km from Hailakandi town. One of the residents of the area alleged that the construction works of Railways are being done in a very casual manner and there was no quality test during the works. There was huge losses due the collapse of the wall and Railways should compensate accordingly, he demanded.
