Probe demanded into tree cutting

JORABAT, Oct 21 - The Dimoria unit of AASU has condemned the illegal cutting of trees in the forests of Dimoria region near Mikir Mohpur village under Sonapur forest range, near Jakoikona sub forest beat office, on the night of October 15 by timber mafia, and demanded an inquiry into the matter, to be initiated by the DFO of Kamrup East Division.

According to Dimoria AASU unit president Jayanta Kalita, the villagers of Mikir Mohpur reported felling of trees by unknown people in the forests near the village on Thursday night.

According to Kalita, when the Morokdola Beat Officer Khagen Bhuyan was contacted by the student body regarding the matter, the latter said that approximately 25 teak logs were seized, but no one has been arrested till now.

The student leader said that the DFO of the East Forest Division must initiate steps to find out if any more logs were lying in the forests and who was responsible for the illegal felling of trees. He added that if any forest official is involved in the nefarious activity, then he must be immediately arrested. He also demanded steps to check further cutting of trees in the forests of the area.

Many other social organisations of Dimoria region have also condemned the illegal cutting of trees.
