President to visit Manipur on March 10

IMPHAL, March 5 � President Pratibha Devisingh Patil will visit Manipur on March 10.

Sources here said that with the official confirmation of the visit from the office of the Rastrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, a security rehearsal is likely to be held on Monday and Tuesday next.

The President during her visit will inaugurate the Manipur State Informatics Centre and will also lay the foundation stone of IT Park at Mantripukhri here in the morning. It will be followed by the launching of SWAN project and afterwards she will depart from Imphal by a special Indian Air Force flight, the source added.

Meanwhile, the oath taking ceremony of the newly-elected MLA in the bye-election to the Assembly from Konthoujam constituency, Sharat Singh of Trinamool Congress will be held on March 8 just before the commencement of the session of the Assembly.

Exchange programme: Union Home Secretary G K Pillai arrived in Ukhrul district headquarter to attend the Tribal Cultural Exchange programme today.

All Tribal students Union Manipur (ATSUM) organised the cultural exchange programme under a common platform of all the ethnic tribes of Manipur at Tangkhul Naga Long ground of the hill station, about 84 km from here.

Pillai in his speech on the occasion said that the world has become a small world in view of the advanced technology like, mobile and internet which are running fast to connect the distant places in a short time.

He added that reading habits need to be encouraged as education and literacy alone will make a better place to live in. Observing that in many metropolitan cities like Delhi and Bangalore he finds many young Manipur natives working in big private companies for their living and maintained modernity along with culture and identity.

This true sense of preserving one�s culture and identity have moved forward to the globalised world, so we need to go along with the love of mankind through culture identity, as �love is God and God is love�, Pillai observed.

Manipur chief secretary DS Poonia, Deputy commissioner of Ukhrul N Ashok Kumar, president of United Naga Council Manipur Samson Remai and President of Kuki Inpi Manipur Thangkhosei Haokip were also present during the cultural exchange programme.

The first cultural exchange programme of Manipur tribals was held on January 30, 2009.
