SILCHAR, May 14 This decade is the decade of innovation. Let this decade be the beginning of the fest of innovation in the country. Education is an important driver of the social changes and progress. Institutions of higher learning like universities have a phenomenal role to play in initiating a movement to meet the moral challenges and ensure that our values are reinstated, said President Pranab Mukherjee at the 13th convocation hosted by Assam University here today.

Mukherjee said if India is to continue forging ahead in the path of higher economic growth, then the relentless pursuit for higher education is an indispensible requirement. He expressed concern that despite a tremendous progress in terms of setting up central educational institutions, these are still largely inadequate to meet the demands.

He said the educational system in the country is controlled by problems of both quality and quantity. But he was happy to see that Assam University has its own innovation club. The innovation club gives the opportunity for interaction between the students and the teachers. I am happy to see the exhibition of innovators at this university. It will provide a platform to recognise the innovations which otherwise go unnoticed and unexploited, Mukherjee said.

In the next leap to strengthen these innovative outputs, a marketing strategy to attract enterprises and investors must be developed, he added. He also spoke about the importance of inspired teachers, who can mould and motivate the students to a great extent.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi said at a time when the whole world is changing, it is time our education system must also undergo a change. It must be rooted to the original values of our age-old traditions and culture. The graduates must also think about the local issues which are affecting lives at large. Everybody talks about problems. But we must stand and find ways to combat those problems. There must be enough room for new ideas, concepts to see the change, Gogoi said.

The Chief Minister expressed happiness over the fact that students from North East are earning laurels for the state and country with their achievements across the globe.

Governor, JB Patnaik said that it is a red letter day in the history of Assam University. He lauded the efforts of research and experiments undertaken by the university.

A total of 4646 students were conferred degrees and awards at the convocation presided over by the newly appointed Chancellor, eminent poet Gulzar. Also, Honoris Causa was awarded to distinguished personalities for their remarkable contributions in the fields of science and literature. They included Soumitra Chattopadhay, Ratan Thiyam, Amitabha Choudhury, Sailesh Nayak, Narasimhaiengar Mukunda and Amit Ghosh. Mrinal Dutta Choudhury was conferred the degree in absentia.
