SILCHAR, May 8 - The Department of Physics, Assam University here will organise a sky viewing programme on May 9 at the Silchar College of Science and Commerce.
The programme will be organised under the supervision of Dr Himadri Sekhar Das, Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics.
Speaking about the event, Dr Das informed that it will be a mega cosmic occasion when planet Mercury will be seen on transit across the Sun. �The transit of Mercury across the Sun takes place when planet Mercury comes between the Sun and the Earth. During a transit, Mercury is seen as a tiny black dot moving slowly in an east to west direction across the Sun. Mercury is seen as a small black dot moving across the face of the Sun.
�Transit of planet Mercury took place in 1999, 2003 and 2006,� Dr Das said.
He added that the image of the Sun will be projected on the screen through the 4-inch Meade Refracting Telescope. Also, an astronomy club will be formed on the occasion.
Further, Dr Das said that the event will start at about 4:30 pm and will be visible across India. The mid-transit will be at 8:30 pm and the event will end at 12:32 midnight. He also said that this phenomenon will not be visible in India after sunset.
