GOLAGHAT, Jan 29 � In Golaghat Assembly constituency, the scenario for the coming Assembly election 2011 is still hazy without any definite activities among the candidates of different parties. The sitting Congress MLA and PWD Minister, Ajanta Neog is ahead in the election campaign as she expects to bag the candidature again from the constituency. AGP candidate Amio Bora, ex-chairman of the APSC and a prominent leader of the regional party, has been campaigning in various places of Golaghat by organising meetings to woo the voters of the constituency. He is confident of getting the ticket from his party. Debeswar Bora, the State president of the Trinamool Congress is one of the main contenders of the Golaghat Assembly constituency. Earlier, he was the president of the Golaghat District Congress Committee and the managing director of the Assam Agricultural Marketing Board.
As the State president of the Trinamool Congress, Bora is sure to get the party ticket. He is trying to establish his popularity among the voters. He is likely to make a dent in the Congress candidate�s prospects as many Congress workers have already joined the Trinamool Congress and have been working in his favour.
In Golaghat constituency, no remarkable works in favour of the voters had been done by the BJP. The party is still not decided over fielding a candidate for the LAC. In the election of 2011, the contest will be held between the Congress (I) candidate and the Trinamool Congress candidate.
Khumtai LAC: The sitting MLA is Probin Kumar Gogoi who was elected for two terms on an AGP ticket. This time, due to his ill health, the AGP high command may not give him the ticket. Gogoi has projected his wife, Upasana Gogoi as the AGP candidate. She has already started her campaign among the voters and has been trying to woo the voters through meetings and discussions in the different areas of the constituency. She has already made a mark among voters due to her good behaviour, dedication and oratory skills.
As the AGP has captured the constituency in previous elections on two terms, the Congress candidate will have to work hard to win the election. The main contenders for the Congress ticket are Bismita Gogoi, the vice president of the Assam Youth Congress and counsellor of the GDZP and Mitali Gogoi, wife of Dip Gogoi, MP, Kaliabor. Both the contenders for the Congress ticket in Khumtai LAC have been working among the voters.
The Trinamool Congress has proposed to give the ticket to Diganta Saikia, a prominent social worker and businessman who has been campaigning through postering, arranging meetings and visiting people door to door to woo the voters.
Mridul Dutta, who was the defeated candidate of the BJP in the last Assembly election, has also been trying to woo the voters with his supporters in the Khumtai LAC. Due to the party�s division and strife among the candidates, the Congress failed to defeat the AGP in the last Assembly election. In the LAC, the majority of the AGP workers are supporting Pradip Goswami, ex-chairman, NJ Mill, as their candidate.
Dergaon LAC: The number of election and awareness meetings has been increasing. The Dergaon Assembly constituency is still dominated by the AGP as the sitting AGP MLA Sushila Hazarika has established a rapport with the people through implementation of the development schemes. She is the main contender for the AGP ticket. Ranjit Das, vice president, Asom Yuba Parishad, the youth wing of the AGP, and Bhaben Bharali, ex-AGP MLA, have also demanded the AGP ticket from the Dergaon LAC.
The main contenders for the Congress ticket for the Degaon LAC are Krishna Das, Jyoti Prakash Narayan, son of ex-minister late Hem Prakash Narayan, and Arati Kachari.
The Trinamool Congress is projecting Rajib Das as its candidate who has already involved himself in party work and started wooing the voters. It is still not certain as to who will get the ticket. The contenders of getting the tickets from the BJP and the CPM are not known till now.
Bokakhat LAC: The main contenders of the Congress (I) ticket are Bhupen Bhuyan, ex-MLA, leader of the Chah Mazdoor Sangha, Arun Phukan, senior Congress leader, Akash Phukan, president, Golaghat District Youth Congress and Minoti Doley, vice president, GDCC. It is not known till now who would get the ticket.
Atul Bora, ex-MLA, Golaghat LAC and chief spokesman of the AGP, is the probable candidate of the AGP. Bora has been working hard to woo the voters by organising meetings, press meets, etc.
Sarupathar: This sensitive Assembly constituency along the Assam-Nagaland border has been dominated by the Opposition MLA Binod Gowala who had already defeated the Congress (I) candidate, Iklius Tirkey on two occasions. For the coming election, Binod Gowala has been trying to woo the voters through his work, behaviour and popularity.
The Congress party has proposed to give the ticket to Biswajit Phukan, the general secretary of the Golaghat District Congress Committee, but it is not sure of his candidature.
On the other hand, Iklius Tirkey, the secretary of the ACMS, ex-Congress MLA and a senior leader of the Congress, may get the ticket this time.
The pre-election scenario in the Bokakhat, Sarupathar, Dergaon, Golaghat and Khumtai LACs is still not clear as it is the decision of the respective party high commands which will decide the fate of the ticket seekers. The voters feel that dedicated and honest social workers should be given tickets for the uplift of the general people of the district.
