GUWAHATI, Oct 11 - As in previous years, Eco Tourism Society of North East is going to hold a contest for the Prakriti Award, to be given to the best environment-friendly Durga Puja of Guwahati.
Initiated in the year 2010, this award aims at creating awareness about conservation of nature and tourism resources of the North-east.
Since its inception, the organisers have received excellent response from the Durga Puja committees of Guwahati.
We conduct the same in five phases registration, pre, ongoing and post-Puja survey and finally the award distribution. Our NGO members collect data on the history, theme, uniqueness and various measures that the Durga Puja committees take to minimise the negative impacts on our environment. Also, our members will encourage and motivate the puja committees to have eco-friendly idols and to design their pandals on themes related to tourism and environment, said Gautam Dutta, president of the society.
It needs to be mentioned that puja committees having proper arrangements related to clean drinking water, dustbins, fire extinguishers, trained volunteers for managing traffic etc., will get added advantage during the competition. The award ensures that all puja committees maintain proper guidelines regarding cleanliness and hygiene.
We also encourage the puja committees to organise art competitions, debate, drama competitions on themes related to North-East India tourism, added Dutta.
