GUWAHATI, Oct 11 - As in previous years, Eco Tourism Society of North East is going to hold a contest for the Prakriti Award, to be given to the best environment-friendly Durga Puja of Guwahati.

Initiated in the year 2010, this award aims at creating awareness about conservation of nature and tourism resources of the North-east.

Since its inception, the organisers have received excellent response from the Durga Puja committees of Guwahati.

We conduct the same in five phases registration, pre, ongoing and post-Puja survey and finally the award distribution. Our NGO members collect data on the history, theme, uniqueness and various measures that the Durga Puja committees take to minimise the negative impacts on our environment. Also, our members will encourage and motivate the puja committees to have eco-friendly idols and to design their pandals on themes related to tourism and environment, said Gautam Dutta, president of the society.

It needs to be mentioned that puja committees having proper arrangements related to clean drinking water, dustbins, fire extinguishers, trained volunteers for managing traffic etc., will get added advantage during the competition. The award ensures that all puja committees maintain proper guidelines regarding cleanliness and hygiene.

We also encourage the puja committees to organise art competitions, debate, drama competitions on themes related to North-East India tourism, added Dutta.

The first phase of registration which began on October 1, will end on October 15. The second phase that is, the pre-puja survey will start on October 16 and continue till October 19, the third phase or ongoing puja survey will be from October 20 to 22, the fourth phase or post-puja survey will be from October 23 to November 8 and the award will be presented on November 10.

During phase one Durga Puja committees will be encouraged to register for the competition. Registration is free for all the puja committees.

During the pre-Durga Puja survey nine puja committees will be shortlisted for the award. They will be the nominees for the Best Environment Friendly Durga Puja of Guwahati. During the second phase the team members of the society will interact with the committee members regarding their preparation and also regarding the steps they have taken to minimise the negative impacts on the environment.

Phase three or ongoing Durga Puja survey will be the most crucial phase for the entire competition. An expert team will judge the puja committees based on environment-related parameters.

During the post-puja survey the society members will monitor the post-puja activities of the puja committees like immersion of idols, opening of the pandals etc.
