Power Dept asked to study potential

GUWAHATI, May 17 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today directed the State�s Power Department to properly study the potential of the non-conventional sources of energy, like wind, in the State. He also directed the Department to initiate special steps for modernisation of the commercial marketing of power. For the purpose, the Chief Minister underlined the need for the Department�s exchanging views directly with the consumers.

According to an official press release here this evening, the Chief Minister, who was presiding over a high level meeting on the implementation of the schemes of the Power Department at the Janata Bhawan here, further asked the Power Department to initiate appropriate steps for setting up a new headquarter with all the modern amenities.

At the meeting, detailed discussions were held on the State�s proposed gas turbine project, Myntriang mini hydel project, Amguri solar power project, Namrup replacement project, Margherita Power Plant and the gas-based project proposed at Chandrapur. Discussions were also held on the implementation of the power-related projects of both the Governments in the State and at the Centre.

The Chief Minister asked the Power Department to take steps for the completion of its under-construction projects on priority basis. He asked the Power Department officials to prepare daily reports of the power scenario in the State and to send a copy of such reports to his office.

He laid emphasis on the beginning of the process for supplying power through an underground cable network and directed the Power Department to launch a pilot project of underground cable network in the neighbouring areas of Guwahati.

The officials of the Power Department apprised the Chief Minister of the progress made in implementing the Mukhyamantri Akash Dwip Yojana, Saubhagya Yojana, schemes for electrification of the tea garden workers� quarters and for installation of the smart meters, among others.

The meeting was attended, among others, by Minister of State (Independent-charge) Tapan Kumar Gogoi, Chief Minister�s Legal Advisor Santanu Bharali, APDCL chairman Vinod Kumar Pipersenia, Chief Minister�s Principal Secretary Sanjay Lohia and senior officers of the three state-run power utilities of the State.
