GUWAHATI, July 15 The Kamrup Metro district administration today exuded confidence about dealing with the scarcity and high prices of potatoes that had gripped the city in last few days.

Senior district administration officials said that 12 potato-laden trucks which crossed the Assam-West Bengal border yesterday has reached the city today.

The trucks have brought over 4,800 packets of potatoes and they are to be supplied to wholesalers in the city. This is expected to provide much-needed relief to the common people in Guwahati who were concerned about the scarcity of the essential kitchen item, said an official.

The district administration has directed concerned departments to ensure that the supplies are adequately distributed and there is no pilferage or overcharging, the official added.

Staff from the district civil supplies department has started inspections to ensure that there is no wrong-doing, he added.

Officials said there is no scarcity of either potatoes or onions in the city. Overall, there are 5,735 packets of potatoes and over 6,000 packets of onions available in the citys markets and more are being brought every day. Each packet contains 50 kg.
