Post NRC: Manipur gears up to prevent influx

IMPHAL, Aug 2 - Manipur Government has constituted State level and district level committees to effectively counter the situation post-publication of final draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh made the announcement in this regard during a hurriedly called press conference here this evening.

He said the Special Secretary (Home) will be the chairman of the State level committee while the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police will be the members. �The DC of the district concerned will be the chairman of the district level committees, while SPs, SDOs, SDPOs, SDCs and OCs will be the members,� he informed.

The committees will initiate steps for checking and verification of migrants with immediate effect at every locality and village, he added. The committees may also invite representatives of civil society organisations for participation in its proceedings.

The State Government has also opened a police check post at Imphal Airport to prevent possible influx of illegal migrants into the State. Necessary steps have also been taken at important entry points including Jiribam, Mao Gate and Tamenglong district rail-head considering the situation.

Earlier, the State Government had deployed extra security men at Jiribam area bordering Assam�s Cachar district besides border areas of Tamenglong and Mao Gate area bordering Nagaland.
