Poll panel directive on chopper use

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 3 - The State Election Commission has asked all deputy commissioners to monitor the use of choppers by star campaigners in the panchayat elections.

A number of political leaders, including Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, have been using helicopters during the canvassing for the rural polls.

There are certain norms. If a candidate shares the dais with the star campaigner who is using the helicopter, the expense incurred on the chopper will be added to the poll expenditure of the candidate. If there are two or more candidates, it will be shared between them, an election official said.

According to the norms, even if the star campaigner utters the name of a candidate during his speech, the chopper expense will be added to his poll expenditure.

However, in case the campaigner urges the people to vote for the party, the expense on the chopper will not be considered as that of any candidate.
