SHILLONG, Sept 13 There is a political storm building up in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) with Chief Executive Member (CEM) Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit hinting of stepping down, after a public rally on Friday.
Basaiawmoit is being asked to step down by alliance partner in the Council United Democratic Party (UDP). The executive committee in the Council is a coalition of UDP, Hill State Peoples Democratic Party (HSPDP) and Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) forming the All Regional Parties Alliance (ARPA).
However, the UDP for the past few months has been seeking Basaiawmoit of HSPDP to go for his alleged autocratic style of functioning. The party said Basaiawmoit takes decisions without consulting the coalition partners.
Basaiawmoit said that he would declare his decision whether to quit or stay at the meeting proposed to be held at Jaiaw here, but at the same time did not give a clear answer whether he would resign. The HSPDP leader said he decided to call the public meeting and put an end to the crisis in the Council and said that he wants the alliance to continue.
Recently, the HSPDP held a meeting and expressed faith in Basaiawmoit. Local traders from Iewduh (Bara Bazaar) had also demonstrated in front of the district council against the decision of the UDP to seek Basaiawmoits removal.
Basaiawmoit said he was not trying to involve the public for any political mileage and added: in fact, it was the voice of the people who are against the demand to remove me as the CEM. The CEM said that the public have demonstrated that they can no longer be fooled by anybody.
In the 29-member Council, the UDP has six members, the HSPDP seven, KHNAM four and Congress 11 and one Independent. Meanwhile, the UDP would also take a decision on the alliance in the wake of its constant demand for Basaiawmoits ouster. The party would be holding a meeting on September 15 in this regard.
