Polio immunisation to cover 3.34 lakh

IMPHAL, Jan 18 � Pulse Polio Immunisation (PPI) programme has been organised by Manipur Health and Family Welfare department on Sunday for children of 0-5 years.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Phungzathang Tonsing inaugurated the immunisation programme by giving two polio drops to a child at the department premises here today.

Principal Secretary Health and Family Welfare Dr J Suresh Babu, Director of Health Services Dr O Ibomcha Singh and others.

The PPI programme will be continued for three days as the department is targeting to immunise 3.34 lakh children (0-5years) in 3341 polio booths to be manned by 4034 health workers and subordinate staff.

The Minister said that the government has taken up necessary steps to tackle the report of spread of rabies epidemic following rampant dog bites cases in Churachandpur district. There are also reports of dog bites in other districts wherein around 11 persons have lost their lives in the last couple of months, he said.

Tobacco products: School authorities in Imphal have been directed to prohibit sale of tobacco products to and by persons below the age of 18 years and sale of cigarette and other tobacco products around educational institutions.

The matter was discussed at a day long Joint Interaction Programme on �Tobacco Free Institutions & TB Programme awareness� in Imphal on Friday.
