Policemen urged to remain apolitical

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 28 - The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has written to the Director General of Police urging him to ensure that the police personnel do not act as agents of the ruling political parties in Assam and work in an impartial manner to protect the law and order system in the State.

Alleging that the convener of the youth wing of AJP was recently assaulted by the police at Nalbari over allegations that they were involved in anti-BJP and anti-government activities, the party said that such a partisan attitude by the police personnel is totally unacceptable.

On October 23, Himanku Barman, the State convener of our youth wing Jatiya Yuba Shakti, was brutally assaulted by the OC of Doulashal Police Station Babul Saikia. Barman was looking after the ground level organisational work of the AJP at Bamunbori Gaon under the Borkhetri constituency in Nalbari district at the time of the incident, AJP chief conveners Dr Krishna Gopal Bhattacharya and Basanta Deka stated in their letter to the DGP.

The party also alleged that in recent times, many such incidents have come to light where police personnel were seen acting at the behest of political parties. Unless strict actions are taken in such cases, it would prove to be a great hindrance to the law and order mechanism in the State, the party said, asking the DGP to take immediate action in the Nalbari incident and ensure that the police department as a whole remain apolitical while discharging their duties.
