Police zeroing in on racket of inter-state traffickers

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 6 - The Assam Police has stumbled upon specific inputs about an inter-state human trafficking racket, which is targeting young men and women in the name of providing jobs in private companies through local agents in Guwahati.

Based on the inputs, a concerted operation would soon be launched encompassing various districts, an Assam Police official said.

A source in the anti-trafficking unit of the Assam Police further divulged that it had corroborated inputs to find out that the traffickers spread over different districts, including Guwahati, are controlled by their ringleader based in North India.

We have identified a few specific pockets from where women are being taken to Siliguri and Delhi on a regular basis in the guise of providing employment. These women cease to remain in touch with their families back home after reaching the destination, the source said.

Sources in the Assam Police also revealed that most of the traffickers tend to establish contact gullible women via social networking sites to minimise the risk factor and the victims are now made to travel on their own to a certain point.

We have zeroed in on the names of a few traffickers who are operating as employment agents. However, their antecedents are being verified. If need be, a team of anti-trafficking unit will be sent to Delhi to get to the root of the flourishing nexus, sources pointed out.

As per the figures released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the State has registered the highest number of crimes against women in the country in the year 2017.
