Police, public scuffle during eviction drive

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 23 The ongoing eviction drive at Matgharia in Noonmati turned serious today with locals coming out in large numbers to oppose the action of the Kamrup Metro district administration and pelting stones on civic staff and the police resorting to mild use of force to disperse protesters.

The district administration and Railway staff continued the drive in the area for the third consecutive day to evict squatters who have illegally settled in Railway property.

However, as soon as civic and Railway staff reached the area this morning locals came out in large numbers and did not allow the drive to proceed.

The administration was not able to persuade the protesters to disperse.

They attacked our staff and pelted stones on us. The police force present with us had to resort to mild force to disperse the squatters, said an official overseeing the eviction drive. One police personnel and a few protesters sustained injuries during the scuffle and stone-throwing. The protesters were chased away.

Afterwards, the eviction drive continued. Over 30 illegal structures were demolished.

Along with district administration staff, officials from the Railways, GMC and police took part in the drive.
