Police officer works past retirement!

By Sanjoy Ray

GUWAHATI, May 19 Who says Assam Government employees dont work? An Assam Police officer of the rank of Additional Superintendent of Police continued to work even after her retirement!

Before you read more into it and start looking for words of appreciation, take this shocker of an information.

Not by choice or compulsion, it was the fallout of an unprofessional modus operandi of the State Home department.

Ila Chakrabarty, who retired as the head of the Fingerprint wing of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), worked for 16 extra days even after passing her retirement date.

In fact, sheer negligence and lack of any correspondence by the most crucial department of the State Government were responsible for this embarrassment.

Clueless about her retirement date, the Home department stayed in slumber before the matter was brought to its notice.

Sources in the Police department said, this is not the first instance of its kind. On many previous occasions, such unprofessional attitude of the department had hit the police department, victims on most occasions being low-rank employees.

Ila Chakrabarty was supposed to retire from the job on April 30 but unaware of it, she continued to work till May 16 when a colleague of her enquired about her retirement year. Unable to give a pointed answer, she referred to her office sheet and that is when she came to know that she ought to have retired 16 days back, said a senior Assam Police official.

A retired police official, when asked to comment on the sorry state of affairs, rued, Such a lackadaisical approach can only be expected in Assam. The Police department is a crucial department of the Government and this type of unprofessional and casual approach should never be tolerated. Those responsible should be held accountable.

Even though she was officially not an employee of the department, she had access to all the crucial documents and this is not a matter of joke when it comes to the Police department, he said.

Ila Chakrabarty, when contacted, confirmed the goof-up, although she refused to comment much on the issue.

Even I should have kept track of my tenure but somehow I did not, she said.
