Police officer jailed for rape

NALBARI,Jan 4 � The Nalbari District Session Court today sentenced a police officer accused of raping an Adivasi woman in 2010, to 10 years� imprisonment.

According to sources, the former sub-inspector of Tamulpur Police Station and now OC of Anandobazar Police Station in Baksa district, Chaidur Rahman raped an Adivasi woman on July 19, 2010. A case was lodged against the police officer by the victim at the Tamulpur Police Station.

A cash fine of Rs 10,000 was also imposed, failling which the accused will have to undergo further six months of imprisonment.

It may be mentioned here that the local unit of ABSU had rescued a group of women from being trafficked to some other State. The women were later handed over to the Tamulpur Police Station by the ABSU unit. The rape victim was among the group of the rescued women.
