IMPHAL, July 22 Two Gypsy vehicles belonging to Manipur police were set on fire by angry agitators in two separate incidents during the 48-hour general strike in the State today.

In the first incident, some suspected strike supporters torched a police Gypsy at Hatta under Porompat police station around 8 am today, sources said.

The general strike was called by a Joint Action Committee (JAC) from 6 pmof Sunday to protest against the recent killing of Md Neimuddin in an alleged police firing at Sora under Kakching police station in Thoubal district.

Vehicular movement on the busy Indo-Myanmar Road remained suspended today due to the strike. Imphal bound vehicles from Thoubal were diverted through an alternative Keirao-Langdum road to avoid any untoward incident.

Tension was high in places such as Sora, Lilong, Hatta, etc. The second incident of burning another police Gypsy occurred when the law enforcing agencies were conducting an eviction drive for a highway expansion project survey near Mantripukhuri CRPF camp under Heingang police station around 11am today, the source added. Soon after hearing the news, additional police force were rushed to the area and dispersed the angry mob which was opposing the governments move.

Two Village Defence Force personnel were also reportedly injured when suspected strike supporters pelted stones at Moijing area in Thoubal district.

However, the strike did not affect the normal functioning of government and private offices and other establishments in other parts of the State.
