IMPHAL, Aug 9 - The police prevented a proposed rally of the Congress party which was organised as part of the observance of the Youth Congress Day and the 76th anniversary of the Quit India Movement at the Congress Bhavan here on Thursday.

Policemen stopped Congress workers led by former Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president TN Haokip while they were trying to take out the rally from the Congress Bhavan to pay floral tribute on the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

Seva Dal and Youth Congress leaders confronted the policemen, forcing the latter to fire tear gas shells to control the situation. However, there is no report of any casualty.

Condemning the police action, Opposition leader O Ibobi Singh termed the Governments move anti-people and uncivilised.

Later, Congress workers observed the day by paying floral tribute on a statue of Mahatama Gandhi inside the Congress Bhavan.
