By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 30 - Cracking the sensational killing of a manager of a restaurant in Jayanagar area here on January 13, Basistha police today arrested the driver of the Innova vehicle which allegedly mowed down the victim.

Based on specific source information and our investigation, we have picked up Parag Phukan from the Geetanagar area. He hails from Solal village of Panugaon in Lakhimpur district, Basistha ACP Moushumi Kalita said.

Parag, 28, was allegedly in an inebriated state when he was driving the vehicle. He has been arrested under IPC sections 279/ 304 (A)/ 302. Parag confessed to have hit Bhupinder Singh, manager of Nagameez restaurant at Jayanagar Chariali, around 11.30 pm that night.

Basistha PS OC Chidananda Borah said Parag had an altercation with some youths who too were in an Innova, over blocking of the road. The altercation was taking an ugly turn. Parag tried to flee the spot. He sat on the vehicle and while reversing, he hit Bhupinder who was standing there, the OC said, quoting Parags confessional statement.

The two other occupants of Parags vehicle were identified as nurses of GMCH. Parag said he knew the nurses. They were on night duty and he was giving them a lift, the OC quoted Parag as saying. Parag is a driver by profession. The vehicle (AS01 AM 7695), belonging to one Pradeep Deka, has been recovered from the owners residence at Narikalbasti. Questions have been raised as to why the vehicle owner kept the incident under wraps. Sources said the vehicle was not used after the incident.

Police had initially got a CCTV camera footage which showed the side view of the vehicle, but the registration number was not clear. Over a dozen of white Innovas were examined by the police. One Innova was even intercepted at Jaji in Jorhat district and brought here for examination on suspicion.

Police also used the tower dump during the investigations. In this tactic, police located nearby cell towers and request all of the call, text, and data transmissions that occurred during the crime from the towers provider.
