MANGALDAI, Dec 26 - A police officer of ASI rank was arrested and subsequently remanded to judicial custody on charges of beating up an accused in the police lock-up .
According to a source in Darrang Police, Mukut Ali, an ASI who is presently serving at Bhakatpara police outpost under Kalaigaon Police Station in Udalguri district, arrived at the Sipajhar Police Station in Darrang district early on Monday morning and taking the opportunity of the absence of any senior officer, and by influencing the �sentry� with his official hierarchy, entered the lock-up in a bid to physically assault an accused named Julhash Ali.
As the accused immediately raised a hue and cry and the ASI was restrained by senior police officers rushing into the police station, a case (No. 1060/2017) was subsequently registered against the ASI under Section 448 / 353/ 506 of IPC. In this connection, ASI Ali was remanded to judicial custody by Mangaldai court.
It may be mentioned that the arrested ASI reportedly had a family feud with Julhash Ali, and on coming to know that Julhash was picked up by Sipajhar Police and confined in the lock-up, the ASI tried to misuse his official power for his personal enmity.
