By Correspondent

DHEMAJI, Aug 9 - The Dhemaji Police following a tip-off apprehended four cadres of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) from Uttar Dhemaji area along the Assam-Arunachal boundary on Thursday.

The ULFA cadres have been identified as Parthajeet Konwar (21), Mrinal Phukan (18) of Dhemaji, Janak Baruah (18) of Dibrugarh Laohal and Uday Duwara (23). The police seized a motorbike, four mobile handsets, ULFA flag, sharp weapons and black clothes, besides some incriminating documents from their possession.

The police said that the ULFA militants had made a hideout in the hilly jungles of Laipulia area on the Assam-Arunachal boundary to strengthen their base.

A police team led by Dhemaji Superintendent of Police, Rakesh Reddy, cordoned off the area and nabbed the members after conducting a combing operation.

Police suspect that there may be more ULFA cadres using the jungles of Assam-Arunachal boundary as a safe hideout and try to trigger subversive activities on Independence Day eve.

The police however, is unwilling to disclose more for the sake of investigation.

Arrest of ULFA cadres in Dhemaji on the eve of the ensuing Independence Day -carries much significance, as the outlawed insurgent outfit triggered an IED blast at the Dhemaji College parade ground on the day in 2004. The blast claimed 13 innocent lives including that of 10 children and three women. The police and security forces during subsequent period arrested a number of hardcore cadres of the banned outfit from different parts of the district.

Notably, the judgment in the case came last month after a wait of 15 long years. The Dhemaji District & Session Judge Court pronouncing its verdict sentenced to life four convicts and awarded four years of RI with fine to two others.
