Police action triggered violence: KMSS

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 23 Seeking to attribute the violence indulged in by protesters during Wednesdays demonstration at Dispur to police action, the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) today said that it was the police which first used tear gas and resorted to lathicharge following which the agitators retaliated by attacking the police.

In a statement, the KMSS further alleged that the DSP of Dispur police station even shot a child, Rubul Ali, from close range with his service pistol and then again shot Siva Kumar Sarma both of whom later died at the hospital. The agitators became furious at this and they attacked the police with sticks and stones, it said.

It is to be noted the KMSS, in its statement issued last night, did not bring the allegation of the police officer shooting the child.

The KMSS further said that the protesters had no role in setting buses and a police vehicle on fire which, it alleged, was an act by miscreants to tarnish the image of the KMSS.
