Plight of a victim of witch-hunting

GUWAHATI, Oct 1 � Voluntary organisation Brothers has alleged that some vested interest circles have made a mother of a four children of Balichiya village Under Routa Police Station of Udlaguri District to flee her home dubbing her as a witch.

Brothers secretary general Dibyajoyti Saikia said in a statement here today that the woman Lakshyamati Daimary, wife of Baburam Daimary was a victim of an unsuccessful bid of a sexual advance of a powerful person of her village. On September 14 last, it was claimed by a section of the people that an 18 year-old girl Chitra Gayari, daughter of Dheba Gayari, was possessed by a goddess and the girl described Lakshyamati a witch in front of a section of the villagers.

Soon Lakshyamati became a target of physical attack of some people present at the spot and asked her to leave the village at once along with her family members. Following this, Lakshyamati and the other members of her family had to flee their village.

The family had to hide at different places lest it is subjected to attack once again and it lodged a complaint with the Udalguri District Court, Saikia said, adding, the woman and the members of her family were taken back to their village by Brothers today with the help of the local journalists and the Officer-in-Charge of the Routa Police Out-post. The Routa Police Out-Post has initiated steps against those named in the FIR of the family, Saikia said and made an appeal to the people to stand against such heinous crimes.
